Like normal, we started the day off with an interesting Thought of the Day. Today, two SHADs delivered an intriguing quote. We then had more memorable, impressive SHADspeaks. From playing in international orchestras to a sentimental speech about giving back to a lifesaving community, more speeches opened up my eyes to the different perspectives and lessons learned. After, Jen challenged us to draw random objects using only nine shapes/letters and we found that we could draw all those objects using those pre-defined shapes.

Then, we had a lecture from Dr. Philip Jessop, a professor at Queen's University. He talked to us about "Creativity and Invention in Green Chemistry," a presentation he usually gives to third-year university students. To introduce his topic, he descried two problems in society:
- Research assistants and professors have problems of commercializing their product
- Chemists do not need to take chemistry courses in university that analyze environmental damage of chemicals
Then, he presented strategies and ways to come up with new ideas. First, he gave us two types of ideas: incremental and leapfrog. Incremental ideas only make small changes to current products while leapfrog ideas are completely different ideas from the current ones. One really important message stood out for me here where he told us to "Design for the ideal" for leapfrog ideas. This stuck out to me because of how important and realistic that idea is. Moreover, he told us we cannot put deadlines on ideas and suggested that we take ideas down whenever they happen and write the in a notebook to remember. Even though 90% of those ideas may be bad, 10% of those ideas may be good which can help change the world. In addition, he gave us four strategies to help come up with ideas.
- Search for new discoveries -> don't be afraid to be different
- recognize opportunity
- "More to life than what's obvious" - Jessop
- Could esaily pass by opportunities
- When you find an opportunity, take it
- Can make a problem into a solution to a different question
Example - bad glue turned into post-it notes
- Take existing ideas and combine them
- Identify and reject hidden assumptions
Sometimes, the best product is one that doesn't physically exist
Then, Jessop introduced us to green chemistry which is the design of products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. He reminded that comparisons are relative (need to be in context and tested with something) and to use Life Cycle Analysis to compare the green-ness of items.
Afterwards, we went back to the ILC to continue day 3 of our challenge and continued to innovate a new product to help SHAD staff carry around their necessities. After the field work we did yesterday, we analyzed the ideas and began a point-of-view statement ([user] needs to [action] because [reason]) and "How Might We" questions. We were told to continually ask why (like a three year old) to dive deeper into issues and find more alternatives to a solution. After a short lecture, our groups worked on creating a prototype and presentation for our task by going through the ideation and ideas to action process. Leading the team to make sure we didn't lose track like we did on the first day, I helped guide the discussion and together we created a visual diagram and a presentation.
In the evening, we got introduced to our SHAD cup project where we innovate and create a product/service that would solve an important global issue. This year, the issue was, "How might Canadians meaningfully reduce our individual energy
footprints? (to change ourselves, Canada, and the world)." We needed to complete:
- one page business plan
- idea presentation to get feedback from SHADs, staff, and the community
- final business plan (8-10 pages long)
- final prototype to be the proof of concept as well as the amount of money it would require
- logbook to keep a detailed record of the team's thoughts, ideas, and progress to prevent copying
- formal presentation (10 minutes + questions) to present the business plan and prototype to a panel of judges
After giving us the topic and 6 deadlines that we needed to meet, we brainstormed what we know and don't know about the topic and general questions that we should answer including:
- what is energy?
- when did you use energy today?
- why? why did you use energy?
Then, we were told that we would discuss more about the teams and the topic tomorrow. We were led to house meetings and discussed good and bad parts of the day, to label and give the staff our sleeping bags, and some more ShoutOuts to anyone in our house. After the meeting, I went back to my room to write my SHADspeak.
